Inclusive Language

1 – Before You Get Started: General Considerations

Inclusive Language

Sometimes, jargon is necessary, but you should aim to minimise it wherever possible. This includes avoiding acronyms as much as possible, or ensuring the acronym is written out in full the first time it is used in a document.

Being mindful of language helps create inclusive, respectful and welcoming communication. Therefore, try to:

  • Avoid assumptions about gender, race, ability or background
  • Use respectful language for disabilities and neurodiversity
  • Respect pronouns and identity
  • Watch out for biased idioms and expressions
