Provide Scoring Criteria to Applicants

3 – The Application Form and Process

Provide Scoring Criteria to Applicants

Establishing and providing scoring criteria to applicants at the point of application removes invisible barriers that your applicants may face and ensures you will be made aware of candidate strengths that you care most about.

Applicants might leave out important information if they are not aware they should include it or spend too much time focusing on strengths in a less important area, resulting in underdeveloped sections of their application on their most important experience and abilities.

If you do not share scoring criteria, then applicants with greater knowledge about application processes, whether due to their network or their previous experience with your institution may perform better despite not actually being a better candidate.

Early communication of scoring criteria to applicants reduces the burden on applicants and employers/reviewers. It also reduces the number of applications from those who are unqualified or ineligible, and reduces the chance that qualified or eligible applicants are erroneously judged ineligible for the advertised opportunity.
