Staff Networks

7 – Providing Ongoing Support

Staff Networks

Finally, sharing information about staff networks can help your new starter find people with whom they share similar experiences and backgrounds, encouraging them to feel more included and supported. You could help your successful applicant identify such networks and support them in joining them where possible.

For example, you can:

  • research whether there are criteria for joining networks
  • find out how easy it would be for your successful applicant to set one up should they not find a suitable network is already in existence
  • make the connection between the network and your new starter where possible and appropriate (i.e., can you email the network’s named contact to put them in touch with your new starter?).

If your application process is related to a funding opportunity and your new starter is not joining your institution, you could offer to help them identify online communities and groups which are relevant to their research area and other characteristics (for instance, many fields have online groups for early career researchers.)
